house Bill H. Res. 72

Should Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Be Removed From House Committees?

Argument in favor

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has made public calls for political assassinations, spread a variety of conspiracy theories, and publicly accused a survivor of a school shooting of being a paid actor. Her actions reflect poorly on the House, so the House should remove her as a member of the Budget Committee and the Education & Labor Committee.

She SHOULD be removed from Congress altogether, but minimally committees. There’s no comparison to threatening to murder specific people directly. Whataboutism at best, but really Gaslighting. The GOP is dead, now the QOP stands in their ashes.

UPDATE: This morning, I heard Kim Jon Un promising to once again comply with nuclear ballistic missile restrictions if our country will not not sanction him. OOPS! Sorry, I got confused - it was Ms. loony-toons crazy-pants begging for forgiveness and rewriting the history of her support for QAnon, crazy conspiracies and endorsement of executing Democratic leaders. … Oh yeah, she is a Republican, so whatever she says has to tested by what she does. Contrition is fine, albeit awfully late in the grand scheme of things. However, without atonement as well, contrition is not enough to warrant forgiveness. … … … She should have absolutely been removed from committee assignments by the Republican caucus by at least following there own precedents. They removed a representative from committee assignments because he publicly mused why the words ‘white supremacy’ raised such concerns. Not for promoting it as a political movement, not for campaigning for it nor even endorsing it, at that time. Yet, we have Ms. CrazyPants who has endorsed execution of Democratic lawmakers, loony deep-state conspiracy theories, the ‘big lie’ that the trump really won the election in a landslide, racial smears and concerns over Muslims elected to public office that were invading the Congress. She campaigned with a poster with her holding an automatic weapon in the foreground, with a faded montage of members of the ‘squad’ in the background. She has refused to retract or apologize for any of this except a minor retraction stating that school shootings did occur - but did not fully retract her claims that the school shootings were all staged to put pressure on gun-rights advocates. … … … So the leaderless Republican Party cannot even stand up for their own established standards of conduct. There is no leader that can lead while marching lock-step in the middle of the parade. A leader leads and does not simply just go with the flow. The leaderless Republican Party is in trouble because they’ve handed the keys to a delinquent mob empowered by the leaderless Republican Party’s inability or unwillingness to act to reign in the trump’s abuses which allowed the delinquent trumpublican mob within their ranks to grow and to thrive. … … … Democratic leadership is once again needed to protect the Congress from loony-tunes crazy-pants conspiracy theorists infecting our government. The Republican Party donors are bailing rapidly from this failing and flailing disaster of a Party. Good riddance!

Minimally she needs to be removed from the House Education Committee for saying none of the school shootings occurred, and harassing survivors who are minors. She should also be: 1) reported for child abuse and sued by survivors who are children she has harassed and be restricted from any contact with survivors and their families. 2) fined for not wearing a mask and bring a gun into a workplace against the rules of the workplace. Wish she could be removed from the House for threatening violence against fellow House members but it takes a 2/3rds majority vote to remove her and Republicans seem unwilling to do anything about her. If Republicans can’t or won’t get rid of her they need to make sure she follows the rules of no violence, no endangering others, no harassment of others. Rep Gomez has introduced a resolution to have Rep Greene removed for violent threats aimed at former President Obama & House Speaker Pelosi. Such threats in most workplaces would result in firing but will any Republicans support this resolution? https://momsdemandaction.org/everytown-calls-on-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-to-resign/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackbrewster/2021/01/28/parkland-shooting-survivor-blasts-marjorie-taylor-greene-over-video-confrontation/ https://gomez.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2222

Argument opposed

Congresswoman Greene’s comments and actions are wrong and offensive, but the House as a whole shouldn’t strip a lawmaker of committee assignments — that decision should be made by voters in her district or her party’s conference. The House has important work to do and shouldn’t waste floor time debating this resolution.

She was elected by 75% of her constituency so they just need to let the voters in her district decide if she stays or goes. Or if they go this way then they need to remove AOC for lying about how she barely survived the riot at the Capital back in January. Or how about we remove Adam Schaffer for the Russian collusion conspiracy theory that did not pan out like he thought. Don’t be hypocritical and hold all politicians to the same standard.

What is House Bill H. Res. 72?

This resolution would remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) from the two committees she is a member of — the Budget Committee and the Education and Labor Committee. The resolution states that she “should be removed from her committee assignments in light of conduct she has exhibited” that doesn’t “reflect creditably on the House.”

As a simple resolution that addresses the membership of House committees, this legislation wouldn’t advance beyond the House if passed.

Impact

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA); and House committees.

Cost of House Bill H. Res. 72

As a simple resolution, this legislation would have no cost.

More Information

In-Depth: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is facing backlash over her past conduct, which included calls for members of Congress to be executed, statements that Sandy Hook and other school shootings were staged (including the harassment of a Stoneman Douglas student), and expressing support for a variety of conspiracy theories. In addition to this resolution removing her from committees, Democrats have proposed expelling her or censuring her.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement in announcing a vote to remove Greene from committees:

“I spoke to Leader McCarthy this morning, and it is clear there is no alternative to holding a Floor vote on the resolution to remove Rep. Greene from her committee assignments. The Rules Committee will meet this afternoon, and the House will vote on the resolution tomorrow.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a statement blasting the House Republican leader for not taking action against Greene:

“After several conversations and literally running away from reporters, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA) made clear that he is refusing to take action against conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. As a result, the House will continue with a vote to strip Greene of her seat on the esteemed House Committee on Education & Labor and House Committee on Budget. McCarthy’s failure to lead his party effectively hands the keys over to Greene – an anti-SemiteQAnon adherent and 9/11 Truther.

McCarthy’s cowardly refusal to deal with Greene breaks with calls from Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnellRep. Adam Kinzinger, the Republican Jewish Coalition and several prominent members of the party to take action against Greene.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) released a statement that condemned Greene’s comments and took issue with Democrats’ effort to remove Greene from House committees:

“Past comments from and endorsed by Marjorie Taylor Greene on school shootings, political violence, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories do not represent the values or beliefs of the House Republican Conference. I condemn those comments unequivocally. I condemned them in the past. I continue to condemn them today. This House condemned QAnon last Congress and continues to do so today. I made this clear to Marjorie when we met. I also made clear that as a member of Congress we have a responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard than how she presented herself as a private citizen. Her past comments now have much greater meaning. Marjorie recognized this in our conversation. I hold her to her word, as well as her actions going forward.

I understand that Marjorie’s comments have caused deep wounds to many and as a result, I offered Majority Leader Hoyer a path to lower the temperature and address these concerns. Instead of coming together to do that, the Democrats are choosing to raise the temperature by taking the unprecedented step to further their partisan power grab regarding the committee assignments of the other party. While Democrats pursue a resolution on Congresswoman Greene, they continue to do nothing about Democrats serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee who have spread anti-Semitic tropes, Democrats on the House Intelligence and Homeland Security Committee compromised by Chinese spies, or the Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee who advocated for violence against public servants.”

Of Note: Members of Congress are typically removed from committees by the leaders of their respective party. The most recent example of this occurred in the last Congress, when Republicans removed then-Rep. Steve King (R-IA) from his committee assignments in response to his controversial comments.

Representatives, Thank you for removing Ms. Taylor Greene from all committee assignments. Now take the next step and remove this toxic woman from the House. *** We fully support the expulsion of Ms. Taylor-Greene from any and all subcommittees and from Congress. A partial list of her egregious offenses: (Sources are pasted below.) * She advocates political violence as a tactic for change, stating, "The only way you get your freedoms back is it’s earned with the price of blood.” * A New York Times report detailed Greene’s past ties with extremist militia groups, including the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters, some of whose members participated in the assault on Congress. * She has threatened to assassinate Speaker Nancy Pelosi * She has posted an image on Facebook showing her with a machine gun stating she's coming after the "Squad." * She endorsed calls to execute FBI agents deemed disloyal to President Donald Trump * Greene continued using violent rhetoric just before the November elections. * She has tried to baselessly impeach President Biden as retaliation for Trump's second impeachment * She is an open QAnon supporter and is actively promoting Conspiracy Theories * Greene continued to support the outgoing president’s baseless claims that the presidential election was “stolen” through massive fraud. * She has made absurd claims that school shooting were "False Flag Operations," events staged by Gun Control Advocates * She has repeated the Big Lies about "Pizzagate." * She has made the false claim that Hillary Clinton murders children. Greene supported a conspiracy theory claiming that Clinton had been caught "filleting" a child’s face — an allusion to a baseless, unhinged conspiracy known as “Frazzledrip" * She has made anti-Muslim comments * She has made anti-semitic comments. * She has made racist comments. Yes, but I do wish they would equally target the threat Lauren Boebert’s appointment to the environmental communities poses. Even if Dems concede past errors of judgements on their part (like many here have stated) and allowed Greene to stay, Republicans would still continue to use them as target practice for their victim shaming and blame shifting tactics. There is no upside for democrats in trying to compromise. Who here believes that if Pelosi were to give Greene a free pass and a clean slate, Republicans would do the same for her? More likely Republicans would just use Pelosi’s olive branch to attack her further.

Just heard Margery Greene speak....she says she doesn;t believe in Qanon....she says what she has said and done in the past, is not who she is today....She went on to say we are all sinners and by the grace of God we are all forgiven...Basically , she not be judged by her past behavior.....I would submit #1 that talk is cheap.....#2 the only thing you CAN judge a person on, is their past behavior, words and actions #3 Trust is NOT a "gift"....it is earned. I do believe she should be removed from the committees to which she has been appointed (if not from Congress itself) and in future, IF she really means what she says and IF she is truly sorry for hassling young David Hogg (a Parkland survivor...and you would think that she would empathize with him, defend and protect him, since supposedly her school was held hostage once) and sorry that she retweeted a post that Nancy Pelosi should be shot....then, she can EARN the trust and respect of our Congress and be given greater responsibility but from all her tweets and interviews over the past week or so, I do NOT believe this is possible.

If Greene had any sense of personal responsibility, she would remove herself from these committees after all the inflammatory things she has said and done. It seems that the Republican party doesn't believe in personal responsibility anymore, just staying in power. I don't like the precedent this will set, but since the American people have not heard Greene denounce her past statements, lies, attacks, and theories, then she cannot be counted on to serve on these committees in a responsible way. She also should not go unpunished for attacking other members of Congress. Perhaps it's time to strengthen ethics guidelines for Congress so that there are clear lines and consequences for being a bad example of human behavior.
