California Law Requires Retailers Include Gender-Neutral Product Displays

What's the story?
- The AB 1084 bill makes California the first state to require large retailers to include a gender-neutral section for products like toys and toothbrushes. This bill joins a larger movement to end bias and stereotypes about gender.
- Assemblyman and co-author of the bill, Evan Low, told NBC News:
“We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids,"...“My hope is this bill encourages more businesses across California and the U.S. to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes.”
- Several Conservatives have opposed the bill, arguing that the government should not control businesses or the way parents raise their children. Those in opposition include Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who tweeted:
How does the bill work?
- AB 1084 only applies to stores with over 500 employees and is limited to toys, teething, and hygiene products.
- It does not outlaw boys and girls sections. Gendered sections may continue to exist, but large retailers need to include a gender-neutral section as well.
How are retailers and brands approaching gender?
- Lego announced that it will be working towards removing gender stereotypes from its toys and marketing.
- Target has phased down gender-based signs and aisle labeling in their stores since 2015.
- Clothing brands like Hollister Co. have created new lines of gender-neutral fashion.

Why can we not have a section for each gender? I am sure non binary and gender fluent want toys for their genders. Right now it seems you are a boy a girl or an other. As we continue to add more genders more sections should be mandated. By claiming people are neutral and not providing toy sections for their gender feels as discriminatory as having only 2 sections.
I know it will make it hard to charge women more for exactly the same things but yes, there needs to be a non gendered section.

This makes sense. Dolls with dolls - doesn't matter if it's Ken or Barbie? Why wouldn't you do that? I get that "color" plays a part in good display marketing, but it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to stop manufacturing every single "girl" thing in pink or every single "boy" thing in blue. Come on. Doesn't it make things simple not to have to determine what is male and what is female?
We live in a clown world now.. of course this come out of California. There is no such thing as gender neutral. This madness definitely should not be targeted at children.
Like this is the only problem that California has…worrying about toys. What about crime, homelessness, street drugs, and a dependency on the federal governmental funding? Thank goodness for representation that reflects real issues and patriotic values that recognizes how wonderful the USA is. This is more noise from the Woke Community.

I feel the issue they are trying to address is not one of inclusion, but of votes. The children are not suffering discrimination. They may have been suffering some emotional turmoil. You know what? Who cares? Life’s terrain is rough and requires courage and thoughtful decisions. If we smooth out every bump, we limit people’s chance to grow. Pursuit of happiness, not given happiness.
Gender is primary socially constructed anyway. It’s better off deconstructed.
Frankly, having toys in gendered categories is idiotic. At best it’s unrealistic because kids like different things because they’re not defined by their gender. At worst, kids can be psychologically damaged for wanting a toy in the “wrong” section and feeling peer pressure to deny their actual wants and likes to adhere to an arbitrary set of parameters. This is a step in the right direction but I’d rather we outlaw defining gender groups in children’s products.
Gender stereotypes are harmful to everyone. Having spaces in stores that affirm that we are all human and have the same basic needs, without unnecessary advertising and pink taxes, is a great idea.
If it ain't on the Texas Constitution, you have no authority to act.
We are not gender neutral. We are Ben and women and men and women are different in every way.
I don’t care. Why should we police retailers? Its a question somebody found important, but I’m not one of them.

The more stipulations we put on vendors the more the price goes up. Adults know what they are looking for. Leave it to the children they will pick out whatever the TV tells them to buy.
