Heavy shelling and fighting have caused widespread death, destruction of homes and businesses, and severely damaged infrastructure across Ukraine.
As of February 2024, 3.7 million Ukrainians are internally displaced, while 6.5 million are seeking refuge in other nations, and approximately 14.6 million are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 31,000 soldiers have been killed trying to defend the nation from Russia's invasion. Zelensky went on to report tens of thousands of civilian deaths, noting that the true number of those who have died in areas of Ukraine that Russia occupies is unknown.
