White House Announces 'Strongest Global Action Yet' on AI Safety
Are you concerned about AI safety?
U.S. Takes the Lead
In a move described as "the most significant actions ever taken by any government to advance the field of AI safety," the White House unveiled an executive order mandating AI developers to disclose safety results to the U.S. government.
UK's AI Summit
This bold step places the U.S. at the forefront of the global AI governance debate, a position the UK had aspired to secure through a summit it's hosting this week at Bletchley Park. The summit, set to commence on November 1, was organized in response to growing concerns about the potential misuse of rapidly advancing AI technologies, including the creation of lethal bio-weapons and heightened cyber threats.
The UK summit, championed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, will address growing apprehensions about frontier AI. Notable attendees include U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The global AI governance landscape is rapidly evolving. The EU is drafting an AI act, China has implemented strict AI regulations, and the U.S. has now issued its directive. Additionally, the G7 nations are reportedly finalizing a code of conduct for advanced AI system developers.
Expert Opinions
Gary Marcus, a renowned tech entrepreneur and AI specialist, told the BBC that the U.S. initiative appears more comprehensive.
"Biden's executive order is ambitious, addressing both immediate and future risks. While it has some enforcement mechanisms, it might not be sufficient."
Marcus added that the UK's summit seems to have a narrower focus, with ambiguity surrounding its actual authority and impact.
Echoing this sentiment, Alex Krasodomski, a senior researcher at Chatham House, emphasized that the U.S. executive order underscores America's self-perception as the primary authority on addressing AI-related threats.
White House's Stance
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed highlighted the groundbreaking nature of the U.S. measures, stating they represent "the strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust."
