New UK Regulation Makes Gigabit Internet Mandatory in All New Builds
Should the U.S. be doing the same?
What's the story?
- In the UK, new regulations require that all new properties be built with gigabit broadband connections, an internet service that provides a high-speed connection.
- The legislation will also make it easier for residents to install broadband internet infrastructure in existing apartment blocks and properties.
- The costs will be capped at £2,000 per home. The government estimates that 98% of developers can make the necessary additions without exceeding the cost cap.
- Properties in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland may be exempt from this regulation because they set their own building regulations.
- Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) is targeting nationwide gigabit broadband coverage by 2030. Currently, gigabit is available in 72% of UK households.
More Convenient For Residents
- Before passing this regulation, tenants needed permission from their landowner, property manager, or landlord to install upgrades.
- Broadband companies estimate that 40% of landlords who are contacted about upgrades ignore them.
- The DCMS said:
"New laws mean home buyers, renters, and some leaseholders will be able to get lightning-fast connections, holding landlords accountable."
Should the U.S. be doing the same? Should nationwide gigabit connectivity be a priority for the government?
