What is H.R. 2866?
(Updated December 17, 2014)
H.R. 2866 would direct the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of Boys Town — one of the largest and oldest non-profit child care agencies in the U.S.
Boys Town started in 1917 Father Edward Joseph Flanagan, with a mission of "reuniting kids with their families, finding foster homes for others, providing a Boys Town family for those with nowhere else to turn, and still others are receiving help at home where they can remain together as families."
S. 1011 would authorize the minting and issuing of up to:- 50,000 $5 gold coins — struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy
- 350,000 silver dollars — struck in 90% silver and 10% copper
- 300,000 clad composition half dollars — struck in copper-nickel clad
If H.R. 2866 passes, coins would be issued between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018.
Argument in favor
Boys Town deserves a commemorative coin in celebration of it's 100th birthday.
Argument opposed
