This bill would extend emergency unemployment compensation (EUC) through the end of 2014. EUC benefits expired on December 28, 2013.
Argument in favor
Keeps 2.5 million people above the poverty line.
Argument opposed
Costs taxpayers more than 25 billion dollars.

Cost of S. 1747
CBO estimates that enacting H.R. 3546 would increase direct spending by $25.7 billion over the 2014-2015 period.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that by the end of June 2014, 285,000 veterans will lose long-term unemployment benefits. 1 out of every 10 people who receive such benefits is a veteran.
Of Note:
-A recent proposal would revive the benefits in question for five months but not install them retroactively. This proposal would cost taxpayers roughly $10 billion.
