‘It’ll Start Getting Cooler, Just Watch’: Trump Dismisses Climate Change Concerns Amid Wildfires
What do you think of Trump's claims that 'I don't think science knows'?
What's the story?
- President Trump - who has often mocked and denied the reality of climate change - declined to acknowledge the role it played in the wildfires ravaging the American West.
- "We want to work with you to really recognise the changing climate,” California Secretary for Natural Resources Wade Crowfoot told the president at a briefing Monday.
"It'll start getting cooler. You just watch,” the president shot back.
- Crowfoot replied: "I wish science agreed with you."
"Well, I don't think science knows actually," Trump responded.
- At least 27 people have died and dozens more are missing amidst the fires in Oregon and California.
- Shortly after arriving in the Golden State Monday, Trump reiterated his contention that the wildfires are due to poor maintenance of forest floors.
“There has to be strong forest management. With regard to the forests, when trees fall down after a short period of time, about 18 months, they become very dry. They become really like a matchstick. They just explode.”
- Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden labelled Trump a “climate arsonist” and added that his reelection would be catastrophic for the environment.
“If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the White House, why would anyone be surprised if we have more of America ablaze?”
