II. KNOW THE DATES
Presidential Preference Primary - April 2, 2024
- March 3, 2024 - Final day to register to vote.
Absentee Ballot Deadlines
Request an absentee ballot application.
Ballot Request Deadline
- March 12, 2024 - Last day to apply for a mail-in absentee ballot.
Ballot Return Deadline
- April 2, 2024 - Mail-in ballots must be received by the State Board of Elections by 8 p.m. Election Day.
Primary Election - September 10, 2024
Voter Registration Deadline
- August 11, 2024 - Final day to register to vote in the Primary Election.

- August 20, 2024 - Final day to apply for an absentee ballot online, in person, or via mail for the Primary Election.
Ballot Return Deadlines
- September 10, 2024 - Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot. The Board of Elections must receive mail-in ballots by 8 p.m.
General Election - November 5, 2024
Voter Registration Deadline
- October 6, 2024 - Final day to register to vote.
Absentee Ballot Deadlines
Registered voters in Rhode Island who want to vote by absentee ballot this fall should submit an absentee ballot application to their local boards of canvassers as early as possible.
Ballot Request Deadline
- October 15, 2024, at 4 p.m. - Final day to apply for mail-in absentee ballot.
Ballot Return Deadline
- November 4, 2024 - Absentee ballots returned by mail or in person must be received by 8 p.m.

Polling Location

V. WHAT TO TAKE TO THE POLLS
Voter ID Laws
- Rhode Island requires a valid picture ID to vote in person. Mail ballots will not require Voter ID.
Accepted Credentials
- Here is the list of accepted credentials.
Don't have a valid ID?
- Voters who do not bring ID to the polls can vote using a standard provisional ballot, which will be counted if their signature at the polling place matches the signature on their voter registration card.
