Primary Election - March 5, 2024
Voter Registration Deadlines
- February 9, 2024 - Final day for online, in-person, and mail voter registration.
- March 4, 2024 - The final day for military and overseas citizens to register to vote and/or request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m.
Absentee Ballot Deadlines
Registered voters in North Carolina who want to vote by absentee ballot this fall should submit an absentee ballot application online through the N.C. Absentee Ballot Portal or via mail to their local county board of elections office as early as possible.
Ballot Request Deadline
- February 27, 2024 - Final day to apply for mail-in absentee ballot.
Ballot Return Deadline
- March 5, 2024 - Absentee ballots must be received by 7.30 p.m.
General Election - November 5, 2024
Voter Registration Deadlines
- October 11, 2024 - Final day for online, in-person, and mail voter registration.
- November 5, 2024 - The final day for military and overseas citizens to register to vote and/or request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m.

Ballot Request Deadline
- October 16, 2024 - Final day to apply for mail-in absentee ballot.
Ballot Return Deadline
- November 5, 2024 - Final day to return completed absentee ballots. Mail-in absentee ballots must be received by 7:30 p.m. regardless of postmarked date.
Military and overseas citizens can vote by mail using the standard procedure. Ensure your online ballot is received by election officials by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day or received by mail by November 14, 2024.

Voter ID Laws

Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina.
Don't have a valid ID?
- If a voter does not have an acceptable photo ID, they can get one for free from their county board of elections. Alternatively, if a voter cannot show a photo ID when voting in person, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form.
