This Week in Congress: Judicial Confirmations and (Maybe) FY2020 Spending Bills
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda? What else should Congress vote on?
With the House on recess and Senate Democrats blocking FY2020 spending bills that would prevent a partial government shutdown on November 21st, Senate Republicans are expected to focus this week on the confirmation of several federal judges.
The Senate will convene Tuesday for a procedural vote on the nomination of David Tapp to be a U.S. Federal Claims Court Judge for a term of 15 years ahead of a potential confirmation vote Wednesday. Before the Senate adjourned last week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) set up potential procedural votes on the nominations of two circuit court judges ― Danielle Hunsaker to the Ninth Circuit and William Nardini to the Second Circuit ― and two district court judges.
McConnell also filed a motion that would allow the Senate to reconsider the FY2020 appropriations package providing funding for defense, education, health, labor, and diplomatic programs that was blocked by Democratic senators in a failed 51-41 cloture vote last week that required a three-fifths majority.
The House of Representatives will return from its district work period on Tuesday, November 12th.
