This Week in Congress: Ending the Separation of Detained Migrant Families at the Border & Avoiding a Gov’t Shutdown
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda? What else should Congress vote on?
Your lawmakers have a busy week ahead of them, as they aim to send a stopgap funding bill to the president’s desk that would avoid a government shutdown on October 1st before both chambers depart D.C. for a two week recess.
The Senate convenes on Monday, when it will take a procedural vote on a nomination to the Treasury Dept. Tuesday will likely feature a confirmation vote, along with consideration of nominations to the Interior Dept., the Social Security Administration, and an ambassador to several South Pacific nations. At a time to be announced before the end of the week, the Senate is expected to take up the House-passed continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21st.
The House starts its week on Tuesday with votes on several foreign affairs related bills, including a bill sanctioning Burma’s military for its genocide of the Rohingya and a resolution affirming the U.S. alliance with Japan and South Korea. The rest of the week’s schedule will be headlined by bills to end the separation of migrant families apprehended after illegally crossing the U.S. border and to ensure that people apprehended by Customs & Border Protection receive standardized medical screenings.
