Do You Support Military-Run Migrant Detention Camps?
Do you support the military building camps for immigrants?
What’s the story?
- Trump advisers met at the White House this week to discuss increasing military involvement at the U.S.-Mexico border, including building tent-city detention camps for unauthorized immigrants.
- NBC News reported on Friday that President Donald Trump wants to send additional troops to the border to build and maintain detention camps for unauthorized immigrants who can’t be placed in existing facilities—many of which are already over capacity.
- The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the use of active-duty service members for law enforcement within the U.S., unless they are specifically authorized by Congress. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who was at Tuesday’s meeting, was open to sending more troops to the border provided they respect federal law.
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) paid more than $800 million in taxpayer money to 19 private, for-profit immigration detention centers in 2018.
What are people saying?
- "I'm going to have to call up more military. Our military, don't forget, can't act like a military would act. Because if they got a little rough, everybody would go crazy," Trump said during a recent visit to Texas, adding:
"Our military can't act like they would normally act. ... They have all these horrible laws that the Democrats won't change. They will not change them."
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News. But Defense Department spokesperson Lt. Col. Jamie Davis released a statement, saying:
"As we said last year when we were looking at possible facilities at Fort Bliss and Goodfellow Air Force Base, DOD could be involved in the possible construction of facilities to house immigrants. There are currently no new requests for assistance."
