What’s the story?
The Problem Solvers Caucus - a bipartisan group of 48 lawmakers – has unveiled a new plan to resolve the immigration debate in Washington.
Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO), one of the caucus members who helped draw up the proposal, said:
This bipartisan proposal shows that Republicans and Democrats can work together to find common ground on border security and DACA to help the young people who were taken to the United States illegally as children... https://t.co/WS3RSAKxmG

What does it matter?
The major issue leading up to the recent government shutdown was the fate of the so-called "Dreamers," immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children who were protected from deportation by DACA. Congress has been unable to find a solution for the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program, and the latest short-term funding bill expires on February 8.
The Problem Solvers Caucus proposal offers a potential solution. It includes:
A pathway for citizenship for qualifying young undocumented immigrants.
$1.6 billion for walls and fencing.
A new merit-based visa system for underrepresented countries (with work, education, and language requirements).
Visas for Temporary Protected Status recipients poised to be kicked out of the county.
Three-year legal work permits for the undocumented parents of DACA recipients.
Last week, President Donald Trump released his proposal, which supports a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million young undocumented immigrants in exchange for $25 billion for a border wall and a drastic reduction to family-based – or "chain" – migration.
