AT&T Urges Congress to Rewrite Net Neutrality Rules

What’s the story?
AT&T published a series of full-page ads in major newspapers across the U.S. on Wednesday, urging Congress to create an "Internet Bill of Rights" to provide clarity – and consistency – for telecommunications companies.
Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO, wrote in the open-letter:
"Congressional action is needed to establish an ‘Internet Bill of Rights’ that applies to all internet companies and guarantees neutrality, transparency, openness, non-discrimination and privacy protection for all internet users."
Why does it matter?
In December, the Federal Communications Commission voted to dismantle net neutrality regulations, allowing internet service providers (ISPs) to speed up – or slow down – access to apps and websites. ISPs like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon supported the rollback.
"AT&T’s change in tone regarding net neutrality could be because the company is seeking to avoid dealing with state-level rules," Newsweek wrote, referring to efforts by Montana and Washington to establish their own net neutrality laws.
"Because the internet is so critical to everyone, it's understandably confusing and a bit concerning when you hear the rules have recently changed, yet again," Stephenson wrote in the ads, continuing:
"Legislation would not only ensure consumers’ rights are protected, but it would provide consistent rules of the road for all internet companies."
What do you think?
Should Congress create an Internet Bill of Rights? Or should net neutrality be left to the states? Or FCC? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
