Trump Vetoes Bill Rejecting His Border Emergency Order - Should Congress Respect the Veto?
Should Congress support Trump's veto?
Update - 4:00pm:
- President Donald Trump has issued his first veto, striking down a resolution that would have terminated his border security emergency order.
- Flanked by law enforcement officers and families of children killed by people in the country illegally, Trump said:
- "I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it."
- Trump called the resolution "dangerous" and "reckless."
What’s the story?
- President Donald Trump is expected to exercise his first veto over a Congress-backed resolution to terminate the border security order he declared in late-January.
- Lawmakers argued that the president had exceeded his authority in trying to build a border wall over the objections of Congress.
Is a veto the end of the resolution?
- Congress may attempt to override the veto, but based on the 245-182 vote in the House and the 59-41 vote in the Senate, it appears neither chamber has the two-thirds majority needed for a successful override.
What do you think?
Do you support Trump vetoing the Congress-approved resolution to overturn his national emergency declaration? Should Congress vote to override the veto? Take action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
