CA, NM Pull National Guard Troops From Border – Do You Support the Withdrawal?
Do you support withdrawing National Guard troops from the border?
What’s the story?
- California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is pulling most of the 360 National Guard troops sent to the U.S.-Mexico border.
- "The border 'emergency' is a manufactured crisis," Newsom will say during his State of the State address Tuesday morning, according to advance excerpts. "And California will not be part of this political theater."
- A week earlier, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) ordered the withdrawal of the majority of that state’s troops.
- In April 2018, President Donald Trump authorized up to 4,000 National Guard troops to be deployed in the border states of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Following the above withdrawals, 1,145 National Guard troops will remain in Texas and 580 in Arizona.
What are both sides saying?
- Patricia Gándara, co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, told the L.A. Times that history has taught Californians that immigrants are not a national emergency.
“I think we grew up and we realized that immigrants were not a threat,” Gándara said. “We’re the fifth-largest economy in the world. And we have the largest percentage of immigrants in our state. How do you reconcile that if you think immigrants are taking our jobs and bringing down the economy?”
- California’s former governor, Jerry Brown, had agreed to add 400 troops to aid in border-related security at the request of Trump. The president later blasted Brown for placing limits on what the troops could do.
“Looks like Jerry Brown and California are not looking for safety and security along their very porous Border,” Trump tweeted. “He cannot come to terms for the National Guard to patrol and protect the Border. The high crime rate will only get higher.”
What do you think?
