What’s the story?
2017 is nearly over, and it has been a roller coaster for sure. Axios published a chart today showing both the number of breaking political news issues that snagged our collective attention over the last year, as well as how quickly we moved on to the next one — because there was always a next one.
Most of us are pretty exhausted at this point. But the year has not been without its moments of positivity, either. We’d like to invite you to tell us who, in the realm of politics, you are grateful for as 2017 comes to an end. Is it a Member of Congress? An organization? Do you have a favorite bureaucrat or congressional staffer that you talk to every time you call? Is there a political writer that you feel like is in the thick of it, fighting the good fight?
I’ll get us started: this year I'm grateful for my mayor. Among many issues that he has championed this year, including affordable housing and compassionate answers to the opioid crisis, he rescinded this long-standing and universally-resented law in my town, called the odd/even parking law, which requires you to park your car on the odd or even side of the street depending on the day to make space for snow plows.
It was in effect from November 1 to April 1, even if there was no snow.
It made the city a bunch of money in tickets all winter long, so no one expected it to ever get changed. But this year my mayor rescinded it, except when there is actually snow, and instituted a free text-alert system to let residents know when the law would be put in effect given weather reports.
Common sense! Effective use of existing technology! Responsiveness in government! Who knew such things were possible?!? Thank you, Mayor Svante Myrick. I’m so grateful you’re my mayor.
I wish Wu a merry Christmas.

What about you?
Who are you grateful for in politics as we close out 2017?
