Shutdown News: Senate GOP Blocks House Bill to Reopen Government for Second Time
Should the Senate take up the House-passed spending bills?
What’s the latest?
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is continuing to block votes on House-passed funding bills that would reopen the federal government.
- McConnell blocked two House-passed bills, saying the Senate wouldn't "participate in something that doesn't lead to an outcome."
“The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues," McConnell said Tuesday.
- Both chambers of Congress spent the past few weeks voting on bills that have no immediate future until a deal on border security is reached. And they're looking ready to do the same this week.
The State of the Shutdown: January 15
- Tuesday, January 15, marks the 25th day of the partial government shutdown.
- Congress and the White House are trying to broker a deal after the House passed a continuing resolution (CR) on December 20th that included $5.7 billion for border security ― including wall construction ― and $7.8 billion in disaster relief along party-lines. It lacked the votes to advance in the Senate, as have bills passed in January by the Democrat-controlled House since the new Congress convened.
- Approximately 800,000 federal workers won't receive their paychecks because of the budget impasse.
- Seven departments have been affected, including Homeland Security, Justice, Housing, Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, and the Treasury.
- Various national parks have had to shut down because of toilets reaching capacity and other infractions. Other impacts include Smithsonian museums shuttering and various federal agencies putting loan applications on hold. Travellers are also reporting longer lines at airports.
