What’s the story?
President Trump penned an op-ed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel calling for the country to "fix our self-destructive tax code."
"As we celebrate Labor Day," the President wrote, “we are reminded of the inherent dignity of work and the American worker. In America, we honor grit. We honor determination. We honor craftsmanship. And we honor the men and women who turn dreams into reality with their own two hands.”
It is for the benefit of these laborers, Trump wrote, that "we are launching efforts to reduce the crushing tax burden that is harming our companies and our workers."
"Our self-destructive tax code costs Americans millions of jobs, trillions of dollars and billions of hours spent on compliance and paperwork,” the President wrote.
Why does it matter?
Congress returns to session on September 5th, and tax reform is one of the GOP’s leading legislative missions for the year.
In the op-ed, Trump directly calls on Congress to aid his administration in "fundamentally reforming our tax code for the first time in more than 30 years."
"I want to work with Congress on a plan that is pro-growth, pro-jobs, pro-worker and pro-American,” he wrote.
Trump is branding his new economic platform "The American model." According to Trump, the plan will:
"dramatically reduce income taxes for American workers and families"
"nearly double the standard deduction"
make the "complex tax code more simple and fair"
"raise wages for American workers"
"encourage companies to hire and grow in America"
"bring back American jobs by making our businesses competitive"
"put money back into the pockets of the people who earned it"
By enacting the American model, Trump wrote, "we will add millions of jobs, funnel hundreds of billions of dollars into our economy and give America the competitive advantage we so desperately need."
What do you think?
Will the American model, as Trump wrote, "unleash America’s full potential. And in doing so…truly make America great again"? Or would you like to see a different model? Congress is back in session tomorrow—hit the Take Action button and tell your reps what you want to see in a tax plan.
