It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:
1. "Nancy Pelosi could be in trouble as House Democrats delay vote"
After a major loss in the 2016 elections, House Democrats delayed their vote for leadership until after Thanksgiving on Tuesday to do some "serious soul-searching." That might not be good news for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (R-CA), who has led House Democrats since 2003. “No formal challenger has surfaced to Pelosi, but Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan has emerged as the de facto leader of a younger group of House Democrats looking for new direction.” The election is now slated for November 30.

2. "Paul Ryan Re-Nominated By Republicans As Speaker"
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was "unanimously" re-nominated by fellow House Republicans to serve as speaker next year. “Ryan still has to win a majority by the full House when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2017. He's expected to easily win that vote, but could still face some defections.” Ryan’s leadership team including Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), GOP Policy Chair Luke Messer (R-IN) and Conference Chair Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA) were also reelected.
"There will be three new members of the GOP leadership in the 115th Congress": Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH), who will chair the National Republican Congressional Committee, Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), who will be the conference secretary, and Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), who will be the vice chairman of the conference.

3. "Trump Transition Shake-Up Part of 'Stalinesque Purge' of Christie Loyalists"
Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), who was "coordinating … national security efforts" for Donald Trump’s transition team, abruptly resigned on Tuesday. “Two sources close to Rogers said he had been the victim of what one called a ‘Stalinesque purge,’ from the transition of people close to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who left Friday. … Multiple sources indicated that Christie was demoted because he wasn't seen as sufficiently loyal to Trump, failing to vocally defend him at key moments on the campaign trail.”

4. "Carson not interested in serving in Trump administration"
Ben Carson has told Trump "that he isn't interested in serving as secretary of Health and Human Services," friend and business manager Armstrong Williams said Tuesday. Williams added that Carson will continue to serve “as an unofficial adviser.”
"Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he's never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency," Williams said.

5. "Obama: Trump tapped into a 'troubling' strain"
President Obama "issued a warning Tuesday against ‘crude nationalism’ in the wake of Donald Trump's victory," during a press conference in Athens, Greece, “on his final overseas trip.” Obama added that President-Elect Trump “had tapped into a ‘troubling’ strain of rhetoric playing on Americans' fears of globalization to win the presidency.”

6. "U.N. officials denounce ‘inhuman’ treatment of Native American pipeline protesters"
"The United Nations' special rapporteur on the rights of freedom of association and peaceful assembly released a forceful statement Tuesday, calling out U.S. security forces for using violence against protesters peacefully opposing the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota, as well as what he called “the inhuman and degrading conditions" those arrested faced in detention.”
