What is H.R. 5205?
(Updated June 23, 2016)
This bill would require the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to transfer specified federal lands in Nevada to other government agencies. It would designate 73,500 acres as wilderness — in order to make it a
component of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
H.R. 5205 would also designate approximately 23,000 acres for economic development and require the Secretary of the Interior to protect specified areas for the benefit of the Te-Moak Tribe.
The bill would transfer about 12,000 acres of land to the city of Yerington, and about 9,114 acres to the city of Fernley.
Argument in favor
The bill strikes a balance between preserving wilderness areas and economic development — paving the way for much needed job creation.
Argument opposed
If the federal government is going to do anything with this land, it ought to sell some of it to pay down the debt.
Impact
Residents of Northern Nevada areas currently held by the BLM, Te-Moak tribe members, the BLM, and the Secretary of the Interior.
Cost of H.R. 5205
The CBO estimates that implementing this bill would cost less than $500,000. It would also increase offsetting receipts by $2 million in 2015.
Additional Info
Of Note:
Lyon County, Nevada would stand to benefit from the passage of this bill, as the bill is projected to allow the creation of between 800 and 1,000 jobs related to the copper mining industry. This has been impeded by the federal government’s ownership of the lands around Yerington, which suffers from the state’s highest unemployment rate.
