Trump Nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
- President Donald Trump has announced his nominee for the Supreme Court: Brett Kavanaugh.
- Kavanaugh, 53, is an appellate judge from Bethesda, Maryland, who’s been working on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit since his appointment by President George W. Bush in 2003.
- The Yale Law School graduate clerked for retiring SCOTUS Justice Anthony Kennedy in 1993 and is a longtime protégé of Kenneth Starr (Kavanaugh wrote much of the Starr Report, which detailed former President Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky).
- Late last year, Kavanaugh dissented on a decision that allowed an unauthorized immigrant teenager to get an abortion. He also rejected the Obama administration’s mandate that religious groups provide contraception coverage to employees.
- But the nominee also rejected the notion that he – or any judge – is partisan:
“I firmly disagree with the notion that there are Republican judges and [Democratic] judges. There is one kind of judge. There is an independent judge under our Constitution.”
