Averting a Shutdown & Renewing Surveillance Powers - This Week in Congress
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
Congress returns Tuesday from the long weekend observing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to a loaded schedule as it faces a deadline of midnight Friday to fund the government and renew intelligence agencies’ surveillance powers.
The House will vote Tuesday on bills to lift miscellaneous tariffs affecting American businesses, develop a strategy to help families in Section 8 and Section 9 subsidized housing become self-sufficient, and mint $1 coins to promote innovation. The rest of the week will feature votes on legislation to fund the government, punish healthcare providers who don’t provide care to infants born alive following an attempted abortion, replenish the World Bank while requiring reforms, and lift mortgage reporting requirements for small banks.
The Senate will vote Tuesday on whether to limit debate to 30 hours on a reauthorization of the government’s surveillance powers under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). If successful, it would set up a passage vote later in the week at the conclusion of debate.
