What’s the story?
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), who has been accused of harassment by multiple women, has officially declared that he will retire from the House of Representatives, effective immediately.
During an interview with a Detroit radio station, Conyers made his announcement:

He is reported as having endorsed his son, John Conyers III to replace him:

But what does that even mean, practically? What happens now?
According to the Constitution, citizens can only serve in the House of Representatives if they are elected, unlike in the Senate, where a replacement can be appointed by the state’s governor.
In this case, it’s up to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, to call for a special election, the timing of which is up to his discretion. Snyder may not choose to call a special election prior to the regular 2018 November election, though whenever the special election date is announced a primary date will be announced as well.
Whether Conyers’ endorsement will help or hinder his son in that contest is yet to be seen. There are already multiple names being floated to run, including Conyers’ nephew, who currently serves in the Michigan legislature.
What do you think?
Was Conyers right to retire immediately? Should Gov. Snyder call for a special election soon, or let it ride until November?
