Freedom of Information Act Foils White House Attempts to Keep Visitor Logs Secret
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
The White House visitor logs haven’t always been public, but following years of efforts by watchdogs concerned about the undue influence of big money on politics, the Obama administration began releasing the records in 2009. The Trump administration reversed that policy and has refused to release the logs.
Now Property of the People, a transparency watchdog group, has successfully sued the administration under the Freedom of Information Act for all of the records. Propublica has released the records on all 8,807 meetings over the last 230 days in a searchable format.
For tracking of in-person meetings with the president at Mar-a-Lago and other venues, appearances at events and documented phone calls with foreign leaders and other politicians, you can check the "Unofficial White House Visitor Log" being compiled by Politico. It is up-to-date through October 31.
What do you think?
Should the White House be releasing the White House visitor logs? Why or why not? Will you search the records? What will you be looking for?
