Countable Explains: Who's Who in the Russia Investigation
James Comey
Role:
Former FBI Director (2013-2017)
Quote:
"Yes, because I’ve seen the President say so."
— Comey, on whether he believes he was fired because of the Russia investigation
Key dates:
May 9, 2017: President Trump abruptly fires Comey. Initially, Trump says he fired the FBI director at the behest of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
May 11, 2017: Trump contradicts his earlier claim, telling NBC News that he was thinking of the "made up" story about ties between Russia and himself when he fired Comey. "When I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.'"
June 8, 2017: Comey participates in an open hearing with the Senate Intelligence Committee. Comey is asked whether he believes Trump obstructed justice by firing him or by asking him to back off the Flynn investigation. Comey responds: "I don't think it's for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct... I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning, but that's a conclusion I'm sure the special counsel will work towards to what the intention was there and whether that's an offense."
