I am opposed to cuts in Child benefit. I will oppose any attempt to cut Child Benefit payments, if the government wants to target high earners in the upcoming budget then the way to do that is to target their income through taxes not through cutting child benefit....we all know if they start on high earners then the tresh-hold will lower every year. The Government’s own value for money review of child benefit published in 2010 demonstrates the dependence of middle income families on child...

It’s analysis found that households in the 4th and 5th of ten income bracket fall below or onto the poverty line after paying their taxes and it is child benefit that then lifts them onto and over the line respectively. So protect Child benefit.

Fair deuce to u maurice ur always thinking of the people, but its alrite for joan burton and enda kenny cos they have plenty of money and there kids wont grow hungry and cold, how would joan burton like to live on 200 euros a week and see how she get on .....

They talk of protecting the rights of children and then they do this. They are pushing more families below the poverty line while at the same time they drip feed the banks with money. They are not looking out for our children. The children are our future and they have done enough damage to their futures already. Enough is enough. It will turn the recession into a depression. Disgraceful.

Im with you Claire! I've never marched for anything, but tis time Im taking a stand. My kids are losing out on enough as it is with the way things are. Enough is enough. I will happily organise buses if people are willing to march....

I'll bring the flask Debbie!! A friend of mine made a good point today. They put this out there, we all go mad about it so then they say ok we will only take €20 for each. We then say sure at least thats less then we thought and all roll over!! Not this time I say. Any cut even if its only one euro is not acceptable. We have given enough.

Child benefit rose hugely in the boom years. In 1997 it was €38 by 2005 it was €103 and by 2008 it reached €166. The reason for this rise was to finally make some inroads into helping parents with the huge cost of childcare which Govt do not subsidise. It was felt that by universally raising Child Benefit it was recognising the cost of childcare where both parents were working while also acknowledging the work being done by parents who chose to stay at home to care for their children.

it was one of the right things that were done during the Celtic Tiger years - we finally valued the work of caring. To reduce it now would be a very retrograde step. As someone who was at home for 10 years with my young children I completely oppose the Government now telling me that work has no value.

Right, on so many levels Barbara.

I hear you Barbara - I hope this proposal is re-considered (ie - dropped!!). However, I'm becoming increasingly disillusioned with this government which appears to be every bit as arrogant as the previous incumbents.

Well said cuz.its shocking what's going on over there.xx

they should stop sending childrens allowance abroad as is happening for years. people taking the piss applying here and then going home to their own countries crippling ours. this countries polices regarding non nationals returning home with payments from here is a very sad affair.
