Lets ban plastic bags in California - we are so close...

Posted by Daniella on Aug 23

The California landmark bill that will eliminate the distribution of approximately 19 billion plastic bags from the checkout lines has reached a critical phase and needs our help.

Take a moment to contact your senator (list and contact info below), call a friend and ask them to call also. We can win this one! The Governor has indicated that he will sign the bill once it passes the Senate vote.

Fourteen senators are still undecided. They need to hear from you! Please visit http://plasticpollutioncoalition.org/...… Read More

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A free Eco-country in the making!

http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/tran...

Since this one was found, more have been found in all the oceans of the world!

There was a story about a man that made an artificial island to live on out of plastic bottles. His idea could be used to help solve this problem. Here is a video about him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvn9l1pJ3-A
But there is a way to build an island in days instead of years.

Old discarded fishnets make up 10%-20% of this garbage. No need to buy them. Grab out of the water and start making little islands out of them and the plastic. Tie your boat up to it, you own an island free and clear. Improve as little or as much as you like.

There are a large number of salt tolerant plants called Halophyte, which can be planted, on these islands locking up the plastic in the root systems. Latter they will form dirt on top of that layer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halophyte
Other sections can be decked in bamboo or other material.

Some groups are already looking at the concept of a sea city built out of this trash.
http://www.recycledisland.com/index.html

After some small islands are established techniques like they suggest can be used, without the high cost of ships and start up cash. The small islands then become factories for building larger nicer islands.

The good thing about them is also their location. Mother Nature brought all that garbage to clam waters in the ocean. Storms and waves are less frequent, so the trash islands form naturally and this will help maintain the man made islands there.

These islands could even become a platform at sea for another goal, An independent country, an Eco-Country. 500 people are needed to file for status as a country. 500 people could live on houseboats moored to these islands in international waters building the starter islands.

It is a crazy idea, now where can I find 500 insane people? Better yet Thousands to start building one on every patch of garbage in the oceans.

Have also created a group 'pacific ocean rubbish' on FB. The more people we can make aware of the problem the greater chance we have of solving it!!!!

Probably like most people who joined this cause, I was shocked and frightened when I heard about this situation. Maybe with all of the things to be worried or take action about that we constantly hear in the news, this is actually a collective mess more scary than most. This seems like something that should be getting priority, emergency, red alarm bells ringing action. But how to get that when so many alarm bells constantly ringing about so many things?? We need to prioritize and realize that this is real, really real and will affect all of us. So when I try to get my friends and family to be aware, they will be jaded already. But that is what has to be gotten through.
