Former Slave Speaks at Youth for Human Rights International Event

Maria was a slave for five years in the Los Angeles area. Since being freed, she has dedicated her life to educating others about the harsh reality of modern-day slavery. She now plans to teach young girls in her native country about human traffickers. Maria spoke at a recent Youth for Human Rights International event in Los Angeles featuring noted investigative journalist Ben Skinner, where she shared her remarkable story.

27 Million Human Slaves --
There are more slaves today than at any time in history
Ben Skinner, Author of A Crime So Monstrous

Ben Skinner, the first person in history to observe the sales of human beings on four continents and the author of A Crime So Monstrous - Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery, was the featured speaker at YHRI's recent Los Angeles event on human trafficking. Mr. Skinner is an investigative journalist who has seen human slavery -- of men, women and children -- first-hand. He is also a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy of Harvard Kennedy School, and a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University.

Attendees learned about the inhuman treatment of modern-day slaves, which inspired many to help ensure that human rights education is made more available around the globe.

How This Year’s Bear Dance Came to Be
Posted by Judy Kohel at 9:18am on April 15th, 2010
How This Year’s Bear Dance Came to Be
My name is Robert and my spiritual name is Mato Iyankahan (Running Bear). I am a Sundancer and completed my Sundance commitment at Fort Peck, Mt under Uncle Melvin Gray Bear some years ago. It has been many years that I have prayed about the Bear Dance that, for the plains nations is no longer done.
After three years of Hanblecha on Bear Butte dreaming about this ceremony, the following year fasting at Devil’s Tower, more than I can explain was shown to me regarding this ceremony. I have spent the past four years trying to find someone who may be alive that knows about the old way regarding this dance. I have found nothing. I guess I was seeking validation to what I already know as well as wanting to be fully prepared to start something that has been gone a for a long time.
Since the dance in Montana came to an end with the passing over of its Intercessor Melvin Gray Bear, I have done what I can to help at Sundances in Porcupine SD for David Swallow and at Wounded Knee, SD for Gerald Ice. Both of these men, I consider friends and continue to help at both dances by taking flesh offerings from both the dancers and community at both dances.
I live in Wisconsin and am a Spiritual Leader in my community. I provide ceremonies in four of our Correctional Institutions. My spiritual way is my life and full time job so to speak. I am not an enrolled member with any nation. The only family I have is my Menominee relatives that are there for me. The European side of my family abandoned me years ago as a young boy. I was in a lot of trouble then and I guess that was an embarrassment to them. (This now helps me help others) I have for the most part, stood alone. This Bear Dance for myself, is being done for a lot of reasons, but why it is happening at all, is for the people.
In the spring, the bear comes out of hibernation and the young newborn see the world for the first time being born underground. The trees bear their leaves again, the ones that leave for the winter return. This ceremony is a time to celebrate life, making it through another winter and remembering those who did not. Many medicines were lost with those whose lives were taken. We need these things back for the people. I have heard that it all still remains and it will come back when the young people learn to hear the spirits voice. Through this ceremony, I pray that this will help that to happen. Too many of our young people are not learning and too many of our Elders are leaving with no one to have taught.
I invite all to come who can come with an open mind and respect to celebrate living. To come and be prepared to learn and be a part of. We will be dealing with difficult issues like fear, anger, guilt and shame so these things can be healed and not imprison us.
This spiritual way has given me a life to live and all I can promise is this dance will be as strong as all who come together to give life back.
