Please complete a short survey - Save the Washington State Library

Posted by Rand on Sep 6

Hi, Everyone. Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. We are now entering the season in which the governor and her Office of Financial management begin to prepare the state budgets and to plan budget cuts. Soon it will be time to contact our state officials to tell them that the budget cuts to the Washington State Library have been too deep -- to tell them that enough is enough!

Unfortunately, my Senator, Dan Swecker, is a Republican with little sway over the budget. Nevertheless, I wrote to him and asked that he encourage his colleagues, especially those of Ways and Means, to support the House budget cuts.

The proposed Senate budget is a cut of $1.470 million, which reduces our ability to maintain the level of federal funding which assists libraries of all types in the state. The proposed House budget is a cut of $428,000, which will allow us to keep the federal funds. Contact the Senate Ways and Means and your Senator and ask them to adopt the House budget for the library.

Rob Masterson was in the process of editing a documentary about the Western State Hospital Grave Concerns Association when he learned his position would be terminated, yesterday, February 12. This media specialist has unique gifts which help preserve history and documents. A terrible loss of a long term employee.

The Grave Concerns Association hopes that he will be able to complete the work....visit our page at Facebook or...

The House and Senate may release their budgets as soon as next week, so contacting your legilslators now will make a difference. Please let them know that the Washington State Library reaches all Washingtonians, either directly or through their public libraries and libraries in schools, two year and four year colleges, and special libraries. Your voice will make a difference!

The February 2010 economic forecast for Washington State has been released. Now the legislative budget writer will begin in earnest to create budgets in both houses. This is the time to act!

You can make a difference! A phone call or email to your senator or representative on behalf of the Washington State Library can be effective.

Send a simple message to your legislators: As your constituent I want you to know that the Washington State Library is important to me as well as all people in Washington. Restore $987,000 in state funding to the Washington State Library so that it will continue to receive full federal funding. The people of Washington benefit from the federal funding through their local libraries.

You can find the phone numbers and email addresses of your legislators at http://www.leg.wa.gov/pages/home.aspx. Follow the House and Senate links under "Legislator Pages." If you don't know the names of your legislators enter your address information here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder....

Later we may come back to you and ask you to target specific individuals. For now let's do a general blitz of the legislature.

Thanks.

If you couldn't contact your legislators on Feb. 1, there is still time to make your opinion count. Write or call and let them know how important it is to save the federal funds that support the school, public, two year and four year academic and special libraries in Washington.

I heard back from Sam Hunt... "Thanks for the email, Kelsey. I do support the State Library and hope we can restore some of the funds in the proposed budget reduction. It really depends upon how much new revenue we can generate to help close the deficit."

Message from my Republican Representative, Gary Alexander's staffer: "Thank you for your email. Representative Alexander will do his best to preserve federal funds for the library system."
What have you heard?

Message from my Republican Senator, Dan Swecker: I am not in favor of any of the Governor's proposed budget, especially with the cuts she has decided to make.

My colleagues and I have been working together to come up with alternative cuts throughout the budget in order to create revenue and save jobs.

Thanks to everyone who contacted their legislators today, in person,by email or phone. And many others have done that in previous days. Let's keep up the communication, so that legislators remember the importance of the State Library in Tumwater, at Washington Talking Book and Braille Library and the branches, as well as the impact of its federal funds throughout Washington. Thank you to all of our supporters! You are doing an amazing job.

What a day! People visited their legislators and contacted them by phone and email all on behalf of preserving the Washington State Library. Thank you! As I write this message we are 660 members strong. I am amazed and pleased. If you have taken action on behalf of the State Library or plan to do so would you share your story in the "share your story" box? Thanks. Rand

I sent a message to my 3 representatives a few minutes ago urging them to restore money to the WSL budget to preserve our ability to receive and distribute federal funding. The process is easy and convenient.
