  • Kathryn What an exciting Stand Against Racism we had last Friday! Seventy five participating organizations and several more sponsors. We had small private stands with just a few people getting together to talk about racism, and large public stands where a hundred people got to participate in a conversation on race in our community. My parents didn't believe in racism and either do I. My ex and I (he is Black) were held hostage in our home by a group of white guys who didn't believe in mixed relationships. I called the police and they said they couldn't send anyone out even though I told them we were being held at knifepoint.

Here's some unfortunate proof that racism exists: I was just surfing through YouTube just now and found this message embedded on the bottom of a video: "We are establishing a sovereign and independent all-White nation in the Pacific Northwest, which shall serve as a Homeland of safety and freedom for all White peoples the world over. www.northwestfront.org/"
The video is dated from September 2006, but there are people out there who think like this. The link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmbSup...
This is what you are standing against. Keep it up.

Racism Hurts Everyone!

The Stand Against Racism is a movement of the YWCA. Our goal is to unite groups and individuals that share in our vision of a society free of racism and discrimination. Together, we want to raise awareness that racism still exists.

The Stand Against Racism is an annual event. The 3rd Annual Stand Against Racism will take place April 30, 2010. Over 200,000 people are expected to take a Stand Against Racism. We hope you will be one of them!

We invite your group (any group of any size can participate) to become a Participating Site of the Stand Against Racism by hosting a local "Stand."

A Participating Site could be a business, non profit or civic organization, school, hospital, unit of goverment, church or temple or other house of worship.

I have always been a firm believer that a person shoun never be judged by their race, religion, gender, age, etc. A person should only be judged by their actions, and even the actions can be forgiven.

There's an article in the New York Times today about subtle racism in hiring that minorities, particularly African Americans, face but are uncomfortable admitting. Hopefully the YWCA and SAR in raising awareness and creating dialogue will empower others to speak out and take action against racism and all forms of discrimination. The NYTimes article was sad in that it showed the difficulties and mixed feelings that people have in even discussing racism.

Hi SAR friends,

The YWCA of the Greater Triangle in North Carolina is excited to participate in SAR for the first time this year.

We plan on using this as a fundraising opportunity as well. Three questions: 1) What have some other organizations learned about how much money corporations are willing to give? 2) What's a reasonable amount to ask for? 3) Is any seasoned SAR group willing to share their budget?

Thanks!

Bridgette
