I am still in hopes that Southwest Airlines will give the nod to Pensacola as there was considerable support for them locating there. I live in the Nashville area and my wife and I visit family in Pensacola once a month. It would be nice to get on a jet and make the 400+ mile trip a lot quicker. I always fly Southwest when it's available.

I saw that Southwest has announced flights to Panama City. Does this mean that P'cola is out?

George - here's a copy of the email from the Chamber which I am posting with their permission.

Southwest Airlines Update:

As we enter this Thanksgiving time of year we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your participation in our Southwest Pledge LUV Campaign. The enthusiasm that you brought to the forefront was overwhelming! We rallied together to move our community forward. Our media was incredibly supportive. We were celebrating! It felt good and it sounded good!

And then on October 21st we heard the Southwest-Panama City announcement. That didn't feel so good. At the same time Southwest didn't say it was over for Pensacola. As a matter of fact, we heard we were still in their sights but for a later date.

As many of you know there was a Pensacola meeting scheduled in early October with Southwest officials that was moved to early November. That November meeting is still scheduled. Consequently, we would ask all of you who have pledged to sit tight for just a "bit" longer.

As you recall, your pledge was not to be activated until such time as Southwest announced they were to come to the Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport. We would like to ask you to bear with us for a few more days. Let's give the Southwest executives and our airport officials an opportunity to meet. Then we believe we will know more clearly what the future holds for Southwest and Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport. We will report to you after the November meeting and bring you up to date.

In the meantime, thank you again from all of us for your meaningful participation, your incredible enthusiasm and your willingness to look for ways to bring our communities together.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving.

It would have been nice if SW would have actually looked into Pensacola instead of settling on Panama City. To be honest, with all the military families and extended family such as myself, as well as visitors that would utilize SW to and from Pensacola, I can't see how Panama City won out. It would be great to be able to see our grandaughter and her military parents more often-I think it is shameful that there isn't low cost airfare to airports located close to military bases. It is yet another jab at our patriots and their families. Thumbs down to SW for their lack of support for our military!

I am sad to hear the news about Southwest. Ever since I lived in Phoenix, Southwest has been my favorite airline. What has Pensacola got to do as a city to get some wins? This is an incredible place, and, as Paul mentioned, strategically a key center for travel for a large geographic area. Plus, Pensacola presses emotional hot buttons for a wide range of people. With all the military people who come through here and love to come back to visit, the new Maritime Park and conference centers that will draw in people from all over the country, the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition that brings great attention to our community, UWF and PJC, and welcoming beaches, marine life, historical sites for tourism, and opportunities for cruise lines, amusement parks, etc., the potential for this relationship was amazing for all. Maybe one of the other airlines will step up and offer more direct flights to Pensacola at better rates.

Today's announcement by Southwest Airlines is corporate greed at its best. Southwest sought to create a bidding war throughout NW Florida and not to provide the most strategic service to the Gulf Coast. In an effort to maintain the monopoly on... low fare carriers, SWA made an agreement with private business which shuts out competition for service for 3 years. Corporate greed and not the best interest of the people. Let's pledge some "luv" to our low cost carrier. Thanks AirTran!

Yes it sux because Panama City airport is not a viable choice for Pensacolians (and people west of FWB in general) because there is no good road system connecting Panama City to anything. I think Southwest looked at their bottom line as THE bottom line with St Joe offering so much money. They just won't have the passenger we could have provided at Pensacola airport.

Pensacola is a great choice for Southwest. We want people to come and see what a great place this is! This is a great travel destination and both Pcola & SW can benefit.
