About this Petition:
Britain and America have been friends and allies for many years. The ‘Special Relationship’ (created and cemented by Sir Winston Churchill), that we British have with our cousins over the pond has always been a vital link in ensuring the protection of our two nations and the guarantee that freedom and democracy will continue.
President Obama’s decision to return the Sir Jacob Epstein bust of my Great-Grandfather to the British Embassy earlier this year goes against the spirit and principles of the relationship that we in Britain maintain with the United States. It is indeed right and proper that President Lincoln should share a prided place in the White House, but no more so than Sir Winston Churchill.
My Great-Grandfather was a world leader who ensured that the freedom and democracy that America’s forefathers fought for and created, was secured after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, and then the Axis declared war on December 9, 1941. Sir Winston Churchill is not past history. ‘A nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it.’ (Churchill).
Now, more than ever before, living in a world of great uncertainty and economic, this world needs to see the face of a man who refused to surrender ‘at ALL costs!' The bust of my Great-Grandfather was given on loan to former President George W. Bush at the outset of the 9/11 attacks. It was lent as a reminder of the ‘Special Relationship’ we have. It was lent as a promise that no-matter-what, America will NEVER stand alone again, and it was lent as an example of courage and hope for a better, more peaceful world.
