as an ex-mental health staff nurse I have never ever support this treatment. I refused as a student to assist or attend.

Life problems cannot be solved by electricity.

As a young boy I was a patient at Willmar Regional Treatment Center. I remember seeing adult patients walking the yard or in the canteen from the adult units. Some of them were there permantly because of ECT many years behavior and the damage it did to their brains. They were mentally "vegatative."I was afraid of them. I feard becoming like them one day. And early this year I was civilly commited to the Minnesota DHS at Anoka Regional Treatment Center where I met and lived in the same unit...

And early this year I was civilly commited to the Minnesota DHS at Anoka Regional Treatment Center where I met and lived in the same unit as a young man who had been through a year or so of ECT. He was given ECT to both sides of his brain. In todays use of ECT one sider is almost always the way it is done. The patient was a zombie-he could not function mentally. He couldn't talk well, nor remember almost anything Some times he spent days forced to lay in hs bed most of the day. He drulled, stared blankly infront of him, and was hard to be around out of empathy. Other patients said he was not like that when he came their. They said he was always talking, making trouble, and joking around. He was a behavioral problem for the staff. After almost a year of his ECT treatment he was lost- he was like a ghost struggling to attach to this world. I will never forget him. I will never forget that a psychiatrist can get a judge to sign papers that give them power to take away our minds either. I am afraid that my own depression will one day lead to.

Maybe have a lawyer write up a statement from you that you refuse to have this done now or ever and sign it so you have legal paper to show you do not want this done to you in your lifetime! May work I hope! Good luck always, Grace Ayotte

My god what century are we living in. I thought this sortr of treatment went out with the dark ages. Of course I support the stopping of it and can't believe I need to. My sympathy to all who have had or are in fear of having any such cruelty imposed on them. RUBY if no consent is needed does that occur only if the patient has no family to back them?

In Republic of Ireland, psychiatrists have been given power, under the 2001 Mental Health Act, to over-rule next-of-kin's wishes. Not sure what the law is in other countries. I am ashamed to be irish and absolutely TERRIFIED of growing old, having once before been reduced to a vegetative state, by psychiatrists who inflicted "intensive treatment" (ect + hi-dose anti-psych meds + sodium amytyl) on me, without my consent and without my knowledge. When I found out, it was already
too late to prosecute them.

It's maddening that in this day and age, when all the science proves how destructive this truly is, that we STILL do it. It's inhumane and completely immoral.

I will def join this cause. My brother in law was put through it for being gay, many years ago. They thought it could change a gay person to be straight. I did not know they were using it on women.

I can't believe they still do this...
