China Reportedly Tests Nuclear-Capable Hypersonic Missile
Are you concerned about China’s hypersonic missile test?
What’s the story?
- China’s military tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August and caught U.S. intelligence analysts by surprise, according to a report by the Financial Times. The “very advanced” capabilities demonstrated by the test have prompted comparisons to when the Soviet Union beat the U.S. in the early stages of the space race with the launch of Sputnik.
- The test reportedly involved a hypersonic glide vehicle that was launched on a Long March rocket into low-orbit, circumnavigated the globe, and came within a few dozen miles of hitting its target. The Chinese government denied that it tested a hypersonic missile and said it was a spacecraft, although it didn’t publicly disclose the August 24th launch in the same way it has done for other launches involving the Long March rockets, including a July test involving a spacecraft.
- Hypersonic missiles fly at speeds of at least Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound or one mile per second) and in that regard, they’re similar to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). What makes hypersonics a particularly challenging threat is that unlike ICBMs ― which have a fixed range and don’t maneuver in flight as they follow a standard ballistic (or parabolic) flight ― hypersonics can be highly maneuverable in flight, fly at a lower trajectory in the atmosphere, and don’t face the same range constraints.
- Those characteristics make hypersonics exceedingly difficult to track and could allow a hypersonic missile to evade America’s early warning, tracking, and missile defense systems that are designed to deal with ICBM threats until there is little time to respond.
- China has been a leader in the development of hypersonic weapons, fielding its first in 2020, although Russia became the first nation to field hypersonic weapons in 2019. U.S. Disarmament Ambassador Robert Wood said the U.S. was “very concerned” by China’s latest test and noted, “We just don’t know how we can defend against that technology, neither does China, neither does Russia.”
- The U.S. military’s missile defense agencies are developing capabilities aimed at providing hypersonic missile defense in the mid- to late-2020s according to the Congressional Research Service. Research on offensive hypersonic weapons in the U.S. has been undertaken to varying degrees for more than a decade, and the pace has picked up in the last few years amid advances made by Russia and China. The CRS notes that the U.S. isn’t expected to field hypersonic weapons until 2023 at the earliest, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced a successful test of a hypersonic, air-breathing weapon in late September.

My question is why?
It allows China to have first strike capabilities.
It really doesn't bother me actually. There is nothing we can do about it and if we take a hit we will all be dead instantly anyway. We can't stop it. Just know that it will be quick. One minute your eating breakfast and the next you are having your "afterlife" or whatever you believe happens next. Spend you time working on the things we can change to make life better for all in the here and now.
Communist in this country are working with China and we know it. Nuclear war is an end to the planet not just the US. Posturing and if not - Oh well.. we all go. That will baffle China and communist Democrats. You let them in and we know it. Nuremberg trials of old will nothing compared what you are in for. My Dad was part of it and observed the nazi's soil themselves from fear and struggle when the drop was wrong which happened in most cases. A fitting end to a stolen election and attempt to take over America.
We MUST do all we can to de-escalate the new arms race! Nuclear arsenals are already on a hair-trigger alert and pose the very real threat of instantaneous worldwide mass extinction. There have already been too many close calls caused by technological or human error. (cf "The Doomsday Machine" by Daniel Ellsberg.) The US must renounce first use and work with other nations to eliminate this unnecessary existential threat! The money designated for production of new plutonium pits at Los Alamos would provide far greater security if devoted to addressing our numerous societal needs. Eisenhower was right!
Why is china attempting to develop better weapons and systems? To be better than America, to defeat America, is goal of all our adversaries in the world, to be better to defeat America. America has the most efficient military in the world! That being said, America must maintain the high standards of readiness, superiority of equipment, and commitment to victory. As appears to be happening, they all need to catch up to US, while we continue to set and exceed expectations.
Hell yes! While our country is too busy fighting itself, shit happens around the world that should be our number one focus at all times! Do you know what hypersonic means!?! You don't even need a warhead on it! Nope! The speed alone causes a tremendous impact when it hits! So let's stop with the stupidity! The bickering! Get our asses in gear and stop waisting our money on microchips and everything made elsewhere and make what we need here! We are supposed to be the UNITED States of America...not the DIVIDED States of America! Are we that dumb that we cannot produce our own products? No! We are just lazy! Meanwhile they laugh at us. ... ... ...Time to stand up and be adults instead of selfish idiots. Time to be responsible for your actions or inactions! Time to shut up and buck up! Time to stop blaming others for your mistakes. We need to become the UNITED States of America again...not letting the GQP tear this country apart as it has been doing more so since the trump. ... ... ...Take religion the hell out of politics period! Taking the rights away from women and other folks is not a UNITED thing to be doing! Blocking any person from doing their civic duty to vote is just another f***ing batshit, crazy, nutjob, selfish move! I'm so f***ing sick and tired of all of it! There's no reason whatsoever to be acting like barbaric assholes here when there are others that can and will just wipe us off the face of the earth. ... ... ...Maybe these rich companies and people should pay for what we need to sustain our country instead of trying to own our country. If anyone survives the changing climate and a hit or two from these missiles, you'll be hard pressed to find food because all the wildlife will be killed off too and then there's trying to find safe water to drink. Keep up the blatant stupidity by letting life go by making folks suffer for your selfishness, religious beliefs, your conspiracy theories and authoritarian rule shit. Money won't buy anything when everything is destroyed because of your f***ing attitudes and ignorance! Let's get back to work and improve our lives instead of tearing them apart. Do what's right! China entered an aggressive phase several years ago and has been slowly escalating ever since. This WILL end in another World War at this rate. Since statecraft and economic pressures have proven incapable of doing more than slowing the rate of change of aggression, we need to develop our technologies to counter their new technologies. Expect them to become more aggressive with time, as that is what they have claimed they have the right to do and their actions have proven that they will continue with that plan.
This is a game changer and any American who is concerned about America's security has their alarm bells ringing! This NOT something America can afford to ignore!

One more time - how many wars have we seen China involved in? Yup. None would be the correct answer. Why in hell would I think this is somehow a threat to me? It is a defense against US aggression. I agree the development of this weapon is in response to the Space force created by Trump. Had he not created it, and not been mentally unstable, China would not feel the need to develop such a strong deterrent to US aggression. China’s resources are vast and their political will United, two things the US will probably never have again. That’s why we’re being eclipsed as a nation. Maybe if China did start a war with us we’d do what we should have in the 80s and 90s and start to cut our economic ties with them - but it’s probably too late for that to slow them down and alienating them now that they are on even keel with our military probably isn’t wise either. We’ve certainly helped make them the wealthy nation they are today, but I wouldn’t count on that holding them back from attacking us given enough reason and opportunity. The US political and socio-economic climate is as polluted as our planet and doesn’t favor affordable higher education for the masses required to match china’s growing capacity for R&D and advanced manufacturing. (Kids who stop at Community college aren’t making any real contributions in these sectors.). We need to make higher Ed affordable again to counter China’s rise.
While the Biden Administration is busy talking smack and pushing a $3 Trillion "Infrastructure" Spending Bill (that doesn't do jack squat for you or me), the Chinese are making leaps forward in Military Tech that puts us in the crosshairs. Either get that mess out of the White House or do something that makes us stronger than our enemies! Let's Go, Brandon!

China's hypersonic missile is our US technology and China is deploying it first at a time they clearly appear prepared to invade Taiwan who, we are allied with. The fact is we have allowed China who is a government owned nation to make even unacceptable buys of US Corporations and properties creating an ability to handicap us from within and that certainly is not acceptable. Fact is those candidates accepting Chinese funds should consider stepping down and the voters definitely should remove them at the earliest convenience.
In line with larubia’s comments of course I am concerned about this and many other things! I am concerned we are a joke as we waste precious time arguing about masks and vaccinations in the name of personal freedoms, that we continue our assault on the environment, and turn billionaires into heroes for spending 10 minutes in space, that we continue to obliterate a women’s control over her own body, disenfranchise voters of color, slaughter each other in the name of the 2nd Amendment, continue to encourage and pass homophobic and anti transgender legislation, elect unqualified, narcissistic and opportunistic officials who accomplish absolutely nothing, that we worry more about buying useless shit for Christmas that will simply pile up in our closets or garages than we care about housing people and feeding children and finally I am extremely concerned that we really and truly have stopped treating each other with respect and have shifted to suspicion of each other. And we are unaware that China is testing nuclear weapons? No wonder.
China is running their country and finances like Bernie Madolf, and America is ignoring all the danger signs the CPC EMBODIES. It appears China is greasing the pockets of our colleges, banks, investment houses, and our politicians. Why are we sending our jobs, and money to fund their communist expansion? Why are our representatives so acutely ignorant by ignoring the reports from our own NSA? If I can obtain all this information then why do our representatives stay either ignorant or complicit to the CPC’s wishes? Our money is clearly not making them democratic, and the CPC is seizing the funds and businesses of their own capitalists. The profits on US businesses in China cannot leave the country. Why are we not extracting our country from any reliance on China? This is not an open market, please wake up! We are watching! Please advise!
