Bipartisan Lawmakers Defeat Progressive Amendments to Preserve Defense Funding Boost Above Biden’s Budget
Do you support or oppose the bipartisan defense spending authorization?
What’s the story?
- The House on Thursday cast a bipartisan vote of 316-113 to advance the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2022 after bipartisan lawmakers increased the defense spending authorization level above the White House’s request and held off attempts by progressive Democrats to reverse the funding boost.
- When the bill was considered in the House Armed Services Committee, Ranking Member Mike Rogers (R-IL) introduced an amendment to boost the level of authorized defense spending in FY2022 by $23.9 billion above the $744 billion proposed by President Joe Biden.
- Rogers’s amendment allowed for an increased operational budget ($3 billion); the procurement of additional ships ($4.7 billion), aircraft ($1.7 billion), and vehicles ($878 million); along with other items such as research and development ($5.2 billion).
- The Rogers amendment was adopted on a bipartisan 42-17 vote in the committee, where 14 Democrats joined all Republicans by voting in favor and 17 Democrats were opposed.
- The committee then went on to approve its version of the NDAA on an overwhelming 57-2 vote, sending it to the House floor for further debate this week, when progressive Democrats offered a pair of amendments aimed at reversing the bipartisan budget increase.
- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) offered an amendment to reduce the authorization level by 10% (or $76.8 billion) for all military accounts except for those related to personnel, the Dept. of Defense civilian workforce, or health programs. It was defeated on an 86-332 vote, with all GOP lawmakers and 126 Democrats opposed.
- Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) offered an amendment on behalf of Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) that would reduce the authorization level to the amount requested in Biden’s budget ($744 billion). It failed on a 142-286 vote with unanimous opposition from Republicans, although it did garner a 142-77 majority of the Democratic caucus. The full House then voted 316-113 to send its NDAA to the Senate.
- On Wednesday, the Senate Armed Services Committee cast a bipartisan 23-3 vote to advance its version of the NDAA which also authorizes $768 billion in FY2022, a number in sync with the House’s bipartisan NDAA topline as passed Thursday.

Why is there never any debate about spending moneys to make war but anytime it is for the people of our country we get the shaft! I wonder if Israel. All
0 on weapons of destruction
Decrease Military Funding, increase Police and Social Work Funding. Focus on Children and families in need.
Do you support or oppose the bipartisan defense spending authorization? WHO ARE OUR ENEMIES?????? Cut the defense budget. Invest in education, infrastructure and healthcare. Geez this isn't rocket science. You spend 2/3 of this budget on contractors who have become billionaires from your spending. Just quit. CUT THE BUDGET, screw bipartisan. It is unacceptable for this country to spend literally 100 times more on the military than any other country on the face of the earth.
We need to put more money into counter terrorism and Internet security. Also we need our hackers for do more harm to the Russians Chinese north Americansnorth korean and others then they could ever do to us. We are alone should have the best hackers in the world to protect our Internet and our infrastructure so that no more interference from other countries can harm services to all the people of the United States.
Why can we not get our Infrastructure a couple trillion dollars but yeah we’ll pass billions and billions every single year just for defense I think our home and is in need of defending and spending
This is simply wrapping pork barrel spending in an American flag. Our defense budget has been bloated for years. Our military leadership has been startlingly ineffective. Time for an overhaul.
I would have little issue with the money spent on defense IF it were well-managed.
“Defense spending by the United States increased by $44 billion from 2019 to 2020, according to recently released figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). That increase outstripped growth in spending from other countries, and as a result, the United States now spends more on defense than the next 11 countries combined (up from outspending the next 10 countries combined in 2019).” I think we have fed enough money to war and death SOOOOO NO. Maybe if we put a stop to the corporate invading and robbing of other countries we could save some money and lives not to mention help the refugees get home.
The US has ended the war in Afghanistan, and so defense spending should be lowered. Our national security should be looked at as climate, health, education and financial related as well as military. The military's budget should be re-evaluated in light of that fact and more of the national budget be spent on education, and medical, climate and financial security of the american people.
America has the most well equipped and efficient military ever known to man, yet we have been less than successful at fighting unconventional wars, such as those involving IT? What about the alleged EMP danger? If there are to be increases, it should be in fortifying, modernizing, and developing our IT capabilities defensively and offensively, to protect America, Americans, and American assets worldwide. Spending billions to continue to support the military-industrial complex proliferating weapons purchases may not be most effective method to meet future threats to America!
CAUSES ASKS: "Do you support or oppose the bipartisan defense spending authorization?" ME: OPPOSE. LONG past time to take a hard look at defense spending, pare it down considerably, and commit to a no first strike nuclear position. There are far greater, forever delayed national priorities than providing the military with more toys with which to destroy one another.
jimK I have long since advocated that the combined forces of the United States be reduced to The Army the unit that guards the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Air Force the Unit that flys the planes of Air Force One both airplanes and the Vice President plane be reduced to one and that crew would be in the Air Force. The Navy would have on Cruiser. The Marines would have Marine one and would be reduced to three choppers one would remain on the ground as a back up. The Reserves of all services would be disbanded. The National Guards belong to the 50 States and belong to the Governor. So they can remain. All military academies would be closed and those presently there can go to any college for to complete their four year degree at government expense. All military personnel will be discharged immediately. All military bases worldwide would be closed within 30 days. All military equipment overseas would be donated to the host country. All military equipment in the United States would be sold at auction to the country as the highest bidder. The complete Pentagon personnel will be sent home within 30 days and the building sold to the highest bidder. The head of each service would be the commander that is presently the commander of the unit that is kept. The Space Command would be disbanded. It is time for another country to take over as the world leader whether it be England Germany France China or Russia. We will of course pull out of NATO and other alliances as our military power will be less than Grenada. We would ask that the United Nations to remove their people and leaders and move to another country of their choosing within one year. As a non-power we would remove our nation of racist misfits with roots of slavery and a non-power nation out of the United Nations. All Nuclear weapons would be dismantled within 90 days with the responsibility of China and Russian observers to ensure it is done correctly. All air Defense systems and units and facilities will be dismantled under observation of China and Russia. This will let the world know we are not involved in the destruction of the enemies of this country and we are now a total trusting and peaceful nation. WE ARE NOW WOKE. This will save trillions of dollars each year and the monies received from the auctions will pay for the new green deal.
I propose that more money be put into social programs. Although we would like to believe that the effects of the pandemic are behind us, it's far from over. Unless, of course, you wear a suit and "work" as a Congressperson.
I believe in a strong military and I realize the expense of modern weapons, but what justification if any mandates more money into the military budget. I understand upkeep expenses and a continuous flow of replacement equipment. I also understand new modern missilery for space protection, but where is the justification for an exceedingly expensive waste of money. We can sure build weapons of mass destruction, but no help for education primary or secondary, no help for homelessness, no help for social security, no help mental health, no help for America’s infrastructure.
I support the bill for raising the defense budget. A strong military is a strong America. Our enemies are raising there budgets!
We would not have to spend more on our military if Joe Biden wouldn’t have given $85 trillion worth of US military hardware to the Taliban
What is our government doing to our country? Did any of you truly red the bill before voting? This is crazy! And Republicans voted for it. We will vote you all out!
How much are we going to continue year after to put in Defense spending. Yet we have no money for other things. This is about both Democrats and Republicans pandering to 1 industry and their lobbyists and trying to make the military feel like you have their back. Yet we send people off to war and don’t give a damn about them once they return. I would love to know how many Congress members have stock in military industrial complex. It must be great to pass legislation that you don’t have to abided by. I believe we spend more or military then any other country. How about spending time and effort to pass VOTING RIGHTS LEGISLATION ASAP
Support the military but aim the money at preparedness to win a war. We do not need more pork and wokeness.
