Senate Looks to Reach Coronavirus Relief Deal This Week
How do you feel about this week’s congressional schedule?
What’s happening in Congress?
- The Senate reconvenes Monday with Democrats & the Trump administration negotiating a bipartisan coronavirus relief package that could get a vote as early as this week.
- The House has technically begun its August recess, but if a deal is reached on a coronavirus relief package lawmakers will be called to the Capitol with 24 hours of notice before votes.
SENATE SCHEDULE
- The Senate starts its week Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Mark Menezes to be Deputy Secretary of Energy, with a confirmation vote likely on Tuesday.
- The rest of the voting schedule will depend on the ability of the Trump administration & Democrats to reach a compromise on a coronavirus relief package. The speed with which the Senate can consider will depend on whether unanimous consent can be agreed to speed up debate before and after cloture motions.
- Committees will hold hearings on oversight of the Russia collusion investigation, deteriorating situation in Venezuela, and American nuclear energy infrastructure.
HOUSE SCHEDULE
- The House of Representatives is officially on recess until after Labor Day, but lawmakers may return for votes this week on coronavirus relief legislation with 24 hours of notice if an agreement is reached.
