This Week in Congress: Trying to Avoid a Government Shutdown and Confirming Judges
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda?
Congress will convene Monday facing a deadline of midnight Thursday to avoid a partial government beginning on Friday, when lawmakers are expected to depart for their Thanksgiving recess.
The House starts its week Monday with votes on six bills, including legislation to extend a federal backstop for terrorism insurance, produce reports on the diversity of corporate boards, and reform disaster recovery grant programs. Later in the week the House will vote on a bill to fund the government beyond Thursday night’s deadline, although it hasn’t been introduced as of Sunday. It’s also expected to consider bills to prevent workplace violence against healthcare and social services workers and ban the sale of shark fins before the end of the week.
The Senate will begin its week Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Justice Robert Luck to be a U.S. Circuit Judge for the 11th Circuit, which would precede a likely confirmation vote Tuesday. Later in the week, the Senate will consider the nominations of Justice Barbara Lagoa to be a U.S. Circuit Judge for the 11th Circuit and Adrian Zuckerman to be Ambassador to Romania.
Additionally, the Senate is expected to consider legislation to fund the government once it’s received by the House, although unanimous consent may be required to accelerate its consideration ahead of Thursday night’s deadline. It may also take up legislation to deter China from undermining human rights and democracy in Hong Kong, pending a similar UC agreement.
