As Native Hawaiians and residents of Hawai‘i, we take serious offense at your public attack upon a local fisherman for catching ahi (tuna). Fishing is a critical part of Hawai‘i's native culture. Subsistence fishing and sustainable fishing practices have been feeding Hawai‘i's families for thousands of years. Fishing also supports the livelihoods of many local families.

Actions like yours are ignorant and offensive. They are counter-productive to the many organizations that work in Hawai‘i to create co-existence among our different cultures and natural resources.

We demand an apology to the fisherman and his family as well as to the people of Hawai‘i who have been the caretakers of these islands and their oceans for thousands of years.

We urge your organization to implement policies that will prevent your intervention within communities that respectfully use animals for cultural practices. This policy should include education and sensitivity training for the executive members of your organization.

Signed,

Trisha Kehaulani Watson-Sproat
