Ban Fracking In California
We are on the cusp of a major uptick in oil extraction here in California, in my and my friends backyard -from the Central Valley to all along the coast, using an "enhanced" oil and gas extraction process called hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking."
Fracking involves mixing a toxic soup of chemicals with sand and water and injecting it at high pressure into the earth, creating cracks in the Monterey shale through which the oil - (mostly heavy, like Canada's tar sands) can flow.
Up to 600 chemicals are used in fracking fluid, including known carcinogens and toxins such as; lead, uranium, mercury, ethylene glycol, radium, methanol, hydrochloric acid, formaldehyde, and more.
Common sense tells us that leaks and spills are a given. It's WHEN - not -IF we will contaminate our air, our water, our land. Indeed, all we have to do is look at the record;
Multiple oil train explosions and derailments across North America, one of which, in Lac Megantic, Canada killed 47 people...and very recently a near miss in PA: http://protectingourwaters.wordpress.com/2014/01/20/a-near-miss-from-disaster-oil-train-derails-in-philadelphia/
Keep in mind approximately 40,000 gallons of chemicals are used per well- chemicals riding on these trains and trucks.
Then there are failure rates of cement casings in the wells, leaching these toxic frack chemicals ( EPA studies confirm) and methane into aquifers and air ( fossil fuel industry records themselves describe a 5% leak rate within the first year and up to 50% within a well's lifetime of 30 years.) And methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than even Co2.
Next we have pipeline leaks and spills, for example the Exxon oil pipeline rupture in Mayflower Arkansas last year. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/01/arkansas-oil-spill-report_n_3690233.html
What do these toxic chemical spills and leaks mean for our health?http://blogs.plos.org/publichealth/2013/06/18/what-is-the-health-impact-of-fracking/
There is also the reality (not controversial) of increased earthquake clusters from high pressure injection of frack waste-water back into the earth. Earthquake clusters that are happening in otherwise non seismically active terrain like the midwest. And those quakes are not all small and inconsequential. The 5.6 in Oklahoma did damage, and was linked to fossil fuel extraction. Geologists say that speeding up the increase of these smaller fracking waste-water induced quakes- may very well speed up the occurrence of larger ones. I don't want to think what this will mean here in CA where we already are earthquake prone.
What happens to the waste fluid that isn't re injected into the earth? It is left in open air pits to evaporate, releasing harmful VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere, creating contaminated air, acid rain, and ground level ozone.
Everyone in the West knows about the drought. But most don't know that each frack well requires an average of 400 tanker trucks to carry water and supplies to and from the site, and can take anywhere from many hundred's of thousands of gallons, to millions of gallons of water to complete one frack job. Thats water desperately needed by farmers, and wine-growers -industries our survival and economy depends upon.
There is simply no amount of regulation that can adequately control for the myriad mechanical failures and human error that the industry has already faced, and yet has chosen to silence or outright lie about in order to keep drilling.
We're preparing for a huge event at the state capitol in about 2 weeks, this March 15. We need to show Governor Brown just how widespread the opposition to fracking California is, and you are essential to making that happen!
We've already gotten over 17,000 signatures but it's time to blast past that. We are standing up to a giant industry and our strength comes in our numbers. PLEASE STAND WITH US FOR THE SAKE OF OUR KIDS AND PLANET!
SIGN NOW, share with friends, and if you can come march with us on the 15th in Sacramento -it will make a difference !
