SOL FOUNDATION’S HUMANE EDUCATION

Sol Foundation’s Humane Education Program serves the community as a long term strategy for large scale change and improvement in the quality of animals’ lives. We do this through an educational program designed to help create and sustain a culture of empathy and compassion by shaping moral development and instilling positive attitudes towards animals.

Our mission is simple: help children learn about animals and develop caring and understanding relationships. Through our Kids Club program, school presentations, teacher resources and summer camps, we are making a difference in the lives of future generations, of children and animals.

WHY HUMANE EDUCATION MATTERS
As an educator, why should we be concerned about childhood cruelty to animals?

Studies have shown that cruelty toward animals by children may be a symptom of existing domestic violence and stress; as well as a potential predictor of future violence towards people. As children work through learning about animal awareness they develop compassion, responsibility and patience.

It is well documented that animal cruelty is a sign of serious psychological distress. It often indicates that a child has either experienced violence firsthand or is at risk of becoming violent toward people. Many studies in psychology, criminology, and sociology have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. As educators, we must recognize that children who deliberately abuse animals—or talk about animal abuse in the home—are crying out for help and need immediate attention.

HOW OUR PROGRAM HELPS

The main goal of the Sol Foundation is to decrease both animal cruelty and interpersonal violence by focusing on changing the root of the problem and ending the cycle of violence; resulting in a better world for both people and animals. It is essential to educate the public, especially young children about care and responsibility in order to see change in the future mentality within our community.

Our programs educate by teaching students responsibility and awareness. Responsibility is something students need to understand in order to feel confident. Students must understand that their actions and words are their responsibility and affect others around them. Pet care responsibility is quite common for students though many times it is not one that is given the serious consideration that it deserves. By using pet care as a base to introduce responsibility the concept can be extended to their responsibilities as citizens within the community.
