The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA (GHRC) is a non-profit, grassroots, solidarity organization dedicated to promoting human rights in Guatemala and supporting Guatemalan communities and human rights defenders who face threats and violence. GHRC documents and denounces abuses, educates the international community, and advocates for policies that foster peace and justice.
We strive for a Guatemala that is a peaceful and thriving country where the government is at the service of its citizens, and all people have access to the country’s natural resources; a Guatemala whose rule of law is established and controlled by civilians, where the justice system upholds democratically determined norms, and all people have access to that system. We envision a Guatemala where human rights defenders are respected and have a safe space to work without need for international oversight and monitoring; a Guatemala that has healed from past abuses, where people can speak freely and knowledgably about their history, and where those responsible for past human rights violations have been brought to justice.
We envision a time when women are free from gender-based violence and can enjoy liberty and equality with men as we advocate for a US foreign policy that prioritizes and promotes truth and historic memory, participatory civilian democracy, and social justice in Guatemala.
