Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence.
Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. We are a chapter-based network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom.
In the last two years, SFT has been at the forefront of the non-violent movement to find a lasting resolution to the Tibet issue. From organizing mass mobilizations to carrying out high-profile and strategic direct actions in Tibet and China, SFT has propelled the Tibet issue into international media headlines and demonstrated the urgency and legitimacy of the Tibetan freedom movement. Our efforts, especially in recent years, have transformed the perception of Tibet as a “trendy cause” to a pressing and serious issue that deserves the attention of the global community.
Since our inception in 1994, SFT has strived to build a strategic, effective, and dynamic youth movement for Tibet that uses creative and tech-savvy action to challenge China’s legitimacy in Tibet. Our leadership trainings, dozens of which have been held across North America, Europe, and India, have engaged and empowered a new generation of Tibetan youth and their supporters by equipping them with the skills and tools to be effective campaigners for freedom and leaders in social justice movements worldwide.
In 2008, SFT led the charge, using China’s hosting of the 2008 Olympics Games as a platform to orchestrate a truly international grassroots mobilization for Tibet. Many years in the planning, SFT’s Olympics Campaign succeeded in exposing to the world the Chinese government’s cynical efforts to use the Olympics as a tool to legitimize its rule in Tibet and whitewash its abysmal human rights record. By harnessing the power of our international grassroots support base, combined with the latest information technology, we were able to turn the global spotlight on China’s oppressive rule of Tibet and arguably turn a decisive page in the history book of the Tibetan freedom movement. SFT is now poised to take the Tibet movement to the next level.
1. Tibetan people's right to self determination.
2. Ending China's brutal occupation and oppressive colonization of Tibet and the Tibetan people.
3. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom.
