I believe a very major issue in this world is threat of tiger extinction caused by hunting and abuse by the humans when they are used as circus or street performing acts. At the turn of the 20th Century, India was home to an estimated 100,000 of tigers. As a result of hunting, illegal poaching and declining habitats, that number now stands at fewer than 2,000 in the wild.
Every year the tiger population diminishes as hunters are encouraged to participate in illegal hunting parties that’s sole purpose is to shoot and kill tigers in the wild. For some reason this has become a western white man’s fever. However there is a lot more publicity about saving the tigers than there were even 20 years ago. This change in how we look at preserving wild animals is a big positive. There is even places like city zoos as well as amusement parks like Dreamworld on the Gold Coast that have tigers in captivity that expose people to them. This creates a connection with a wild animal and makes people more sympathetic to their threat of extinction.
One of the factors that are impacting on the numbers of tigers is the demolition of their natural environment. “A lot of the diversity has gone because the population has collapsed as a result of the threat to habitat,” said Professor Mike Buford of the School of Biosciences at Britain’s Cardiff University.
Clearly their food source is crucial to their survival and if it continues to be taken away then their numbers will drop. We should be doing everything we can to stop the urban development. A tiger needs to eat about 50 deer-sized animals or 6,600 pounds of living prey every year. Wherever prey-base is adequate and good protection measures are in place tiger populations reach high numbers simply because the species breeds quickly. These animals are starving to death.
I believe that the government should be doing much better research on where they’re constructing knew urban development. This will stop taking away the animal’s habitat and their prey. By persevering this species for future generations we are ensuring their survival. They are a magnificent animal that is important in the food chain.
