I lived in Russia the year Putin came into power. He immediately started restricting freedom of the press and limited the TV news people could watch to state-controlled or owned stations. Disappearing from our cable subscription were NBC, BBC, Deutschewelle, and other foreign news outlets. He also saw to the cancellation of a popular political satire show called "Kukli," in which he was portrayed among the other comical puppet figures on the show. And he sent his thugs into a Jesuit house in Siberia, shot their dog, rounded up all the men into one central room and held them captive for hours while they ransacked the place and ultimately carried off all their computers. I heard this story first-hand from a Jesuit I knew who was there when it happened. Putin is no friend of democracy and no US administration should cozy up to him.
