UN official resigns after pressure to withdraw Israel apartheid report

With its creation the United Nations pledged to "defend life, liberty, independence and religious freedom, and to preserve human rights and justice". But over and over again the organization fails to protect the values it professes, more often than not, shielding perpetrators knowingly and willingly. The withdrawal of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia - ESCWA, charging Israel with the crime of apartheid against the Palestinian people is such an egregious example. This 85 page report that outlines Israel's systematic oppression of millions of people, including a brief history and enumeration of current practices, has just been withdrawn. As if its withdrawal somehow justifies the crimes Israel commits.

"Rima Khalaf, the head of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) which published the report, announced her resignation at a press conference in Beirut on Friday... “I resigned because it is my duty not to conceal a clear crime, and I stand by all the conclusions of the report,” Khalaf stated. As of Friday, a press release announcing the report remained visible on the ESCWA website, but the link to the report itself from the press release no longer works... Khalaf’s resignation, under pressure to suppress factual and legal findings unfavorable to Israel, will send a chilling message to other UN officials that they are better off serving those in power than in upholding any mandate to advance human rights and respect for international law."

Celebrities, this important report specifically stated that “civil society institutions and individuals have a moral duty to use the instruments at their disposal to raise awareness of this ongoing criminal enterprise.” That's us. That's you.

Will you let this report disappear and assist the UN in shielding the perpetrator? Or will you take a stand against apartheid? Will you boycott Israel?
