Loss of sea ice affects polar bears because there is: reduced access to food (seals), a drop in body conditions, lower cub survival rates, an increase in drowning, an increase in cannibalism, and loss of access to denning areas. Polar bears are now much skinnier, have fewer cubs and the cubs they do have more frequently don’t survive to adulthood. Due to global warming, polar bears must swim for longer and longer distances to reach sea ice and their food source of seals. This often leads to drowning.
