PROGRESS: Congress has just passed a bill requiring the Department of Justice to gather nationwide data on police shootings and killings, broken down by race, gender, and age. This latest bill is a major step forward towards a comprehensive database on the scale of today's discriminatory, anti-Black policing crisis. As of today, there is no federal database on police use of force.

ColorOfChange Executive Director Rashad Robinson commented on this critical headway in the movement to end police brutality:
"We applaud the decision of Congress to re-authorize the "Death in Custody Reporting Act", we expect President Obama to quickly sign this critical piece of legislation into law and we urge full and swift implementation of all its provisions by the Department of Justice and other federal agencies. In this historic time and nationwide focus on police accountability, we will continue to hold our national leaders accountable for producing and releasing to the public a complete and accurate account of those who have been killed by cops."

A Ferguson, Missouri police officer racially profiled and fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown as the teen stood with his hands in the air. Mike Brown's…
