Current prisons hold 2,000,000 Americans. Another 5,000,000 are on parole, supervised release, or probation. At no time have any of them been told they are valuable human beings with contributions to make to society and themselves. That they are capable of making a good life by putting in time, effort, getting educational and occupational assistance, and rehabilitating themselves. It is foolish for us to waste these lives and their potential through stupid vengeful practices that are not humane, not logical, not moral, unAmerican, and ineffective.
